The German word for weed, “Unkraut”, carries a dismissive connotation naming plants that are deemed undesirable and usually removed. Yet many of these so-called “Wildkräuter” are ecologically valuable, nourish insects, strengthen soil, and are edible or even medicinal for humans.
Weeds remind us that what is outside conventional order often participates in rich and complex inner ecologies. Weirder, Taller, Louder, Uglier – For Weeds to Rewild repositions weeds as agents that blur and invert the boundaries between outside and inside. Weeds are neither wholly exterior nor interior. They grow through cracks in pavement and walls, intertwine with cultivated plants, and transform both marginal and central spaces.
Weeds appear not only as subjects of study or metaphor, but as active principles. We ask: when is something, an action, or a state “weedy”? What does it mean to “weed” – to unsettle, to permeate, to transgress – within art, institutions, language, politics and everyday life?
Weeds demonstrate that disruption is not merely destructive, but generative, dissolving rigid boundaries and reopening space for alternative formations of identity, meaning, and practice. Gaining ground whilst staying put, they rebel by manifesting life itself. Seen through this lens, weeds exemplify the porousness of inside and outside. They disrupt routines and norms, reveal the interdependencies of systems, and invite us to experience the relational spaces between fixed categories.
This perspective reframes growth and change as dynamic, ravelled processes rather than linear transitions from outside to inside.
Inspired in an intuitive way by these liminal forces, Weirder, Taller, Louder, Uglier – For Weeds to Rewild is the fourth and last exhibition of the year-long curatorial project Louder, Taller, Uglier, Weirder – Learning from Weeds / Von Unkraut lernen.
Composed of sprouting events and exhibitions, our program unfolds with varying, irregular rhythms, seeding conversations and encounters across contexts from gallery spaces to hiding bushes in the Berlin streets. Louder, Taller, Uglier, Weirder – Learning from Weeds / Von Unkraut lernen started to take root at Xanadu in Neukölln to open its first exhibition at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in autumn 2025.
Since then, further “sprouts” have emerged across the city, including recent exhibitions at Galerie im Turm in Friedrichshain and Bärenzwinger in Mitte.
With Weirder, Taller, Louder, Uglier – For Weeds to Rewild, we bid farewell, whilst weeds continue to grow horizontally and far beyond.
